Imlil is the gateway to Jbel Toubkal — at 4,167 m the highest peak in North Africa — a Berber village set among walnut groves and terraced fields about 65 km south of Marrakech, roughly 1.5 hours by road. That short drive makes it one of the easiest ways to swap the heat of the city for cool mountain air, which is exactly why so many people visit on a day trip. You can leave Marrakech in the morning, wander the village, take a gentle walk up the valley towards the hamlet of Aroumd (also spelt Around) through walnut groves and Berber hamlets, perhaps add a mule ride, have lunch with valley views and be back in the city by evening. It is a lovely, easy introduction — but you only scratch the surface. Stay overnight in an Imlil or Aroumd guesthouse or kasbah and the mountains open up: time for a proper half-day walk or the start of a Toubkal trek, a mountain sunset and sunrise, Berber hospitality and a genuinely slower pace. Both work; it comes down to whether you want a scenic day out or to actually be in the mountains.
