Imlil: Day Trip or Overnight from Marrakech?

Imlil — the High Atlas trekking village below Jbel Toubkal — is an easy day trip from Marrakech, but staying overnight is the obvious choice if you want real walking, mountain air and a proper start to a Toubkal trek.

Imlil is the gateway to Jbel Toubkal — at 4,167 m the highest peak in North Africa — a Berber village set among walnut groves and terraced fields about 65 km south of Marrakech, roughly 1.5 hours by road. That short drive makes it one of the easiest ways to swap the heat of the city for cool mountain air, which is exactly why so many people visit on a day trip. You can leave Marrakech in the morning, wander the village, take a gentle walk up the valley towards the hamlet of Aroumd (also spelt Around) through walnut groves and Berber hamlets, perhaps add a mule ride, have lunch with valley views and be back in the city by evening. It is a lovely, easy introduction — but you only scratch the surface. Stay overnight in an Imlil or Aroumd guesthouse or kasbah and the mountains open up: time for a proper half-day walk or the start of a Toubkal trek, a mountain sunset and sunrise, Berber hospitality and a genuinely slower pace. Both work; it comes down to whether you want a scenic day out or to actually be in the mountains.

Our verdict

Which should you choose?

If you are short on time and simply want a scenic taste of the High Atlas, the day trip delivers — the drive is short, the valley is beautiful, and a gentle walk towards Aroumd with lunch and the option of a mule ride makes an easy, rewarding day out of Marrakech. But if you want real walking, the mountain atmosphere of a sunset and sunrise, or to start or summit Toubkal, stay overnight — one night at minimum, and more if you are trekking. Bear in mind that a Toubkal ascent is non-technical but strenuous and is best done with a licensed mountain guide over more than one day, so the overnight is not really optional if the summit is the goal. As a rule of thumb: day trip for the view, overnight for the mountains.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

How far is Imlil from Marrakech?

Imlil is roughly 65 km south of Marrakech, around 1.5 hours by road. The drive climbs steadily into the High Atlas through Asni and the Kik plateau, so the journey itself is scenic even before you reach the village.

Can you visit Imlil as a day trip from Marrakech?

Yes — Imlil is one of the easiest day trips from Marrakech. With about 1.5 hours' drive each way you have plenty of the day left for the village, a gentle walk up the valley towards Aroumd through walnut groves and Berber hamlets, an optional mule ride and lunch with mountain views before heading back. It is an easy taste of the Atlas, though you only scratch the surface.

Is it worth staying overnight in Imlil?

For walkers and trekkers, yes. Staying in an Imlil or Aroumd guesthouse or kasbah gives you time for a proper half-day walk or the start of a Toubkal trek, plus mountain sunset and sunrise, cooler clear air, Berber hospitality and a slower pace once the day-trippers have left. If you only want a scenic day out, the day trip is enough; if you want to actually be in the mountains, stay the night.

Do I need a guide to climb Toubkal from Imlil?

A Toubkal summit is best done with a licensed mountain guide. The ascent is non-technical — no ropes or climbing equipment in summer — but it is strenuous and usually takes at least two days, typically with a night at the Toubkal Refuge around 3,200 m before summiting at dawn. Outside the summer months crampons and an ice axe are needed, which makes a qualified guide all the more important. That extra time is why a serious Toubkal attempt means staying overnight rather than day-tripping.

What is there to do in Imlil on a short visit?

On a day trip most people walk from Imlil up the valley towards the hamlet of Aroumd (Around), passing walnut groves, terraced fields and small Berber hamlets, with the option of hiring a mule for part of the way. You can browse the village's small shops and cooperatives, stop at a café or guesthouse terrace for lunch with valley views, and simply enjoy the cool mountain air before the drive back to Marrakech.
