The best-loved day trips from Marrakech are the Agafay desert (the rocky 'stone desert' closest to the city), the Ourika valley and Atlas foothills, the Atlantic walled town of Essaouira, and the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou with the Ounila valley. Agafay and Ourika are comfortable as a single day; Essaouira and Aït Ben Haddou involve longer drives, so an early start makes them far more relaxed.
Most full-day excursions leave Marrakech in the early morning, broadly between about 7am and 8am, to make the most of daylight and avoid the midday heat. Nearer destinations such as Agafay or the Ourika valley allow a slightly later start, while longer drives like Essaouira or Aït Ben Haddou benefit from leaving as early as possible. Spring (roughly March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable, with warm days and mild evenings. Summer can be very hot inland and in the desert, so early starts and shaded breaks matter; winter days are pleasant but mountain passes and high ground can be cold, and the High Atlas may see snow. Each region has its own rhythm, which we factor into the plan.
