Overview

A private 3-day trek through the Berber villages around Imlil with a licensed guide and mule support: over the Tizi n'Tamatert pass (2,279 m) to Tacheddirt, down the Imenane valley, and back to Imlil, sleeping in village guesthouses.

This trek stays below the big summits and focuses on the villages: terraced fields, walnut groves and flat-roofed houses built into the slopes of the Toubkal region. Imlil is about 65 km and 1.5 hours from Marrakech. Day one climbs about 2 hours to the Tizi n'Tamatert pass (2,279 m) and continues to Tacheddirt, one of the highest villages in the area at about 2,300 m, for the night in a family gîte.

Day two descends the Imenane valley through Ouanesskra and Ikkiss, then crosses a lower pass to Aguersioual, around 5–6 hours on foot. Day three is a shorter walk back to Imlil and the drive to Marrakech. Exact routes vary with the season and trail conditions, and some villages are still rebuilding after the September 2023 earthquake — your guide will choose the route on the day. Walking days are 4–6 hours, with mules carrying the bags.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

How fit do I need to be for a 3-day Atlas trek?

Reasonably fit. You walk 4–6 hours a day on mule paths with climbs of up to about 600 m, but there's no technical ground and mules carry your bags.

What are the village guesthouses like?

Simple family homes or gîtes with shared rooms or private rooms, blankets, and usually a hot shower. Food is home-cooked: tagine, couscous, soup and bread.

Can I combine this with climbing Toubkal?

Yes. Add a day or two to finish at the Toubkal refuge for a summit attempt — the villages trek is also good acclimatisation.

When is the best season for trekking around Imlil?

April to June and September to October. July and August are fine at altitude but hot in the valleys; winter brings snow on the passes.
