Why Sahara & Merzouga

Let's be clear up front: the real Sahara is not a day trip. Erg Chebbi, the 22 km field of 150m orange dunes near Merzouga, sits a full 9-hour drive from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and through the Dadès and Todra gorges — or a one-hour flight to Errachidia plus a 2-hour drive. Anyone selling you a one-day desert trip from Marrakech means the Agafay stone desert, which is lovely but not this. To reach the dunes you need at least three days and a night in a tented camp with Berber hosts. The payoff is one of the most cinematic landscapes on the planet, and the slow southern road there is half the experience.

What to see

Highlights of Sahara & Merzouga.

01

Camel trek into the dunes

A 60–90 minute ride from the village to your overnight camp, ideally timed for late afternoon when the dunes turn copper.

02

A night at a desert camp

The reason this is an overnight, not a day out — canvas suites with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, candlelit dinner and gnaoua music around the fire.

03

Sunrise climb to the high dune

Wake at 5:30, climb 150m of sand and watch the sun come up over Algeria — a moment only an overnight delivers.

04

Erg Chigaga, the wilder alternative

Further south, reached from M'Hamid by 4x4 — quieter, fewer camps and harder to get to. The pick for travellers who have already done Merzouga.

Practical notes.

  • What to pack: Layers (cold nights even in summer), scarf for blowing sand, headlamp, slip-on shoes.
  • Connectivity: Mobile signal at the camp edge, no Wi-Fi at most camps — by design.

FAQ

Sahara & Merzougacommon questions.

Can I do the Sahara as a day trip from Marrakech?+

No. The real dunes — Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga — are about 9 hours away, so you need a minimum of three days and one overnight. The closest genuine desert day trip from Marrakech is the Agafay stone desert (40 minutes), which is beautiful but not the Sahara.

How many days do I really need for the Sahara?+

Three days is the realistic minimum from Marrakech: a day south through the Atlas and gorges, a night at a dune camp, and a day back. Four or five days lets you slow down at Aït Ben Haddou, the gorges and the oases instead of racing.

Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga?+

Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) is more accessible and has more camp options — best for a first visit. Erg Chigaga is wilder, quieter and requires a 4x4 from M'Hamid — better for travellers who have already done the easier desert. Either way, plan around October–April; July and August top 45°C and many camps close.
