Aït Ben Haddou ksar at golden hour
The UNESCO earthen fortified village — climb to the granary at the top for the panoramic view across the river, best at sunrise or sunset, which only an overnight allows.

Why Ouarzazate & Aït Ben Haddou
Ouarzazate sits on the southern side of the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the staging town for the Sahara, the Dadès and Drâa valleys and the kasbah road. Forty minutes away, Aït Ben Haddou is Morocco's most famous fortified village — a UNESCO ksar and the backdrop of Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones, filmed at the neighbouring Atlas Studios. It is 4 hours from Marrakech over the high pass, so a same-day return is technically possible but punishing, and it robs you of the magic-hour light that makes the kasbah worth the trip. The honest way to do it is one night here, then continue toward the desert the next morning rather than racing back.
What to see
The UNESCO earthen fortified village — climb to the granary at the top for the panoramic view across the river, best at sunrise or sunset, which only an overnight allows.
Working sound stages and exterior sets from Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven, Cleopatra and more — an easy add-on in Ouarzazate itself.
A crumbling 19th-century Glaoui palace on the old caravan route, with far fewer visitors than Aït Ben Haddou — a worthwhile stop on the drive over the pass.
Further east on the multi-day desert route: cliff-side roads, walnut groves and one of the most dramatic canyon hikes in Morocco.

Yes — it's the most striking single site in southern Morocco and a UNESCO World Heritage village. Most travellers see it for an hour; we recommend sunset or sunrise.
Technically yes (4h each way) but punishing — and you miss the magic-hour light. Always better to stay one night and continue toward the Sahara the next day.
