It is not sand dunes but a stone desert of khaki hills, and it works beautifully as a half-day: a late-afternoon drive out, a camel ride and a lantern-lit dinner as the Atlas turns pink, then back to the city the same night. Stay over in an en-suite tented camp if you want the stargazing without the long southern haul. For the romance-per-hour, nothing near Marrakech competes.

Is Agafay a real desert with sand dunes?+

No — Agafay is a stone desert of rolling rocky hills, not Saharan sand dunes. It's beautiful at sunset and very convenient, but for classic dunes you need Erg Chebbi (Merzouga) or Erg Chigaga.
