How we got these numbers
Methodology
Distances are road kilometres from central Marrakech (Jemaa el-Fnaa) by the usual private-car route, rounded to the nearest 5 km, and cross-checked against two or more online route planners. Where they disagreed, we used the figure that matches the route our drivers take. Every number is an "about" figure.
The drive column is moving time in a private car at legal speeds, without stops. The "with stops" column adds the breaks people normally take: a viewpoint on the Tizi n'Tichka, a coffee, a cooperative, lunch on the longer routes. Times through the High Atlas on the N9 run slower than the distance suggests, because of bends, trucks and roadworks; motorway routes to Casablanca, Rabat, Fes and Agadir run faster.
The day-trip verdict assumes a normal pickup between 7am and 8am and a return the same evening. Last checked October 2026. Road works, snow on the passes and Friday or holiday traffic leaving the city can add an hour or more.
Questions
Drive times, answered
- Can you do Merzouga as a day trip from Marrakech?
- No. Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes are about 560 km from Marrakech by road. The drive alone is about 8 hours 30 minutes each way, and 9 hours 30 minutes or more with stops. Plan at least two nights, usually one on the way and one in a desert camp.
- What is the closest desert to Marrakech?
- The Agafay stone desert. It is about 40 km from central Marrakech, roughly 45 minutes by car. It is rocky hills rather than sand dunes. The nearest sand dunes are at Zagora, about 360 km away.
- Is Aït Ben Haddou a realistic day trip from Marrakech?
- Yes, as a long day. It is about 190 km each way over the Tizi n'Tichka pass. The drive takes about 3 hours 45 minutes each way, and about 4 hours 15 minutes with a stop on the pass. Expect to leave around 7am and return after dark.
- How long is the drive from Marrakech to Essaouira?
- About 190 km and 2 hours 45 minutes of driving. With a stop at an argan cooperative it is about 3 hours 15 minutes. That leaves about 5 hours in Essaouira on a day trip.
- Which day trips from Marrakech involve the least time in the car?
- Agafay and Lalla Takerkoust, both about 40 km and under an hour each way. Next are the Ourika Valley, Imlil and Oukaïmeden, all about 65 to 75 km and about 1 hour 30 minutes each way.
- Is the Tizi n'Tichka pass open all year?
- The N9 over Tizi n'Tichka is a paved national road and is open most days of the year. The summit sits at about 2,260 m, and heavy snow between December and March can close it for a few hours or a day. Check conditions the evening before any drive south in winter.
