The short answer

The Aït Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate day trip from Marrakech is a full-day, private excursion over the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass (~2,260 m) to the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou — the most photographed kasbah in Morocco and a famous film location — and on to Ouarzazate's Atlas film studios. It is the longest of the day trips, with around four hours' driving each way, so pickups start early (around 07:00) and you are back in Marrakech the same evening — from $60 per person.

What you see & do

A mountain pass, a UNESCO kasbah and a film city

A full-day excursion over the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass to the UNESCO kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou and the film studios of Ouarzazate — a long but unforgettable day from Marrakech.

The Tizi n'Tichka pass

The day climbs over the High Atlas on the Tizi n'Tichka, Morocco's highest major road pass at around 2,260 m. Switchback views, a Berber tea stop and an argan cooperative break up the ascent in both directions.

The Aït Ben Haddou ksar

A fortified village of earthen towers rising from the riverbank — a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. A local guide walks you across the riverbed and up through the kasbahs to the old granary at the top, with sweeping valley views.

A famous film location

The ksar and the nearby studios have stood in for the ancient world on screen for decades — Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven and Game of Thrones among the best-documented. Your guide points out the spots you'll recognise.

Ouarzazate & the kasbahs

Often called the 'Hollywood of Africa', Ouarzazate adds the exterior of the Atlas film studios and the Taourirt kasbah on the edge of town — a fitting end to the southern leg before the drive home.

Who it suits

Is this the right day trip for you?

Film & history lovers

If you came to Morocco for the kasbahs, the film history and the UNESCO ksar, this is the headline day trip. It packs the south's most iconic sight into a single long day from the Red City.

Photographers & scenery seekers

The Tizi n'Tichka and the ochre towers of Aït Ben Haddou are among the most photogenic landscapes in the country. Soft morning and late-afternoon light on the pass is the reward for the early start.

Travellers who don't mind the miles

Be honest with yourself: this is a long day in the car, roughly four hours each way. If a lot of driving for one big sight isn't your thing, a closer trip such as Ourika or the Three Valleys keeps more of the day at the destination.
