Overview

A private 2-day trip close to Marrakech: a sunset camel ride and a night in a camp in the Agafay stone desert, about 30–40 km away, then a morning drive to Imlil for a guided walk through Berber villages below Toubkal.

Agafay is a rocky desert of bare hills about 30–40 km south-west of Marrakech, 45 minutes by car. It is not a sand-dune desert, but it gives you a quiet camp night with a view of the Atlas without the long drive to the Sahara. You arrive in the afternoon via the Lalla Takerkoust lake, ride camels at sunset and have dinner under the stars.

Day two goes south through Asni to Imlil (about 1 hour from Agafay), the trailhead village of the Toubkal National Park. A local guide takes you on a 2–3 hour walk through walnut terraces to Aroumd, with lunch in a village house, before the drive back to Marrakech.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is Agafay a real desert?

It is a stone desert — dry, rocky hills with almost no vegetation — not a sand-dune desert like Merzouga. It is a good choice when you want a desert camp night without long drives.

How far is Agafay from Marrakech?

About 30–40 km, roughly 45 minutes by car depending on where the camp is.

Is the Imlil walk difficult?

No. It is 2–3 hours on mule paths with some uphill sections. Anyone used to walking can do it, and the guide sets the pace.
