Why Marrakech

If you are planning day trips in Morocco, Marrakech is the obvious place to base yourself: more excursions launch from here than anywhere in the country. The Ourika valley and Agafay desert are under an hour away, Ouzoud Falls and the Atlas foothills sit at two to three hours, and the Atlantic at Essaouira is a long but doable single day. The city itself fills two or three days easily — the UNESCO medina, Jemaa el-Fnaa, the Koutoubia minaret, Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the Majorelle and YSL gardens — so most travellers walk the souks one day and head out on excursions the next.

What to see

Highlights of Marrakech.

01

A medina half-day on foot

Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk and the souks of Semmarine, Mouassine and the dyers' lane — a self-contained half-day, best with a local guide to lay the map before you explore alone.

02

Bahia Palace & Saadian Tombs

An easy morning loop through 19th-century palace courtyards, zellige tilework and the rediscovered Saadian necropolis behind the Kasbah mosque.

03

Majorelle & YSL — a quiet half-day

The cobalt-blue garden bought by Yves Saint Laurent in 1980 and the museum charting his Marrakech years — go at opening to beat the queues.

04

Agafay desert, the 40-minute excursion

The closest desert escape to the city — camel rides, dune buggies and sunset dinners at lantern-lit camps, easily done as a half-day before dinner.

05

Ourika valley, an hour out

The simplest mountain day trip: Berber villages, waterfalls and lunch beside the running river, back in Marrakech by evening.

FAQ

Marrakechcommon questions.

What day trips can you do from Marrakech?+

The easy ones are Ourika valley and Agafay desert (under an hour each), then Ouzoud Falls and the Imlil/Atlas foothills at roughly 1.5–2.5 hours. Essaouira on the coast is around 3 hours each way — doable in a day but better as an overnight. The deep Sahara is not a day trip from here.

How many days do you need in Marrakech?+

Three full days covers the medina, the major monuments and one half-day excursion such as Agafay or Ourika. A fourth day lets you add a longer trip — Ouzoud Falls or the Atlas — or simply slow down.

What is the best month to base yourself in Marrakech for day trips?+

March–May and September–November bring warm days (22–28°C) and cool evenings, ideal for excursions. June–August can reach 40°C, which makes long days out tiring; December–February is mild but mountain trips can be cold.
