The breezy Atlantic port of Essaouira is a relaxed base for exploring Morocco's windswept southern coast and the argan country behind it. Within easy reach lie empty surf beaches, a sleepy fishing bay, the cooperatives of the argan road and the inland city of Marrakech. Here are nine excursions with honest travel times, including a note on which are better enjoyed as overnights rather than rushed in a day.

Just 30 minutes south of Essaouira, Sidi Kaouki is a long, wild surf beach backed by dunes and a marabout shrine. Reliable wind and waves make it popular with surfers and kitesurfers, while its handful of cafes and horse and camel rides on the sand make it an easy, breezy half-day.
The road inland toward Marrakech passes through argan country around Ounagha and the Val d'Argan vineyard. Women's cooperatives press argan oil by hand and goats famously climb the thorny trees. It is a gentle half-day into the rural hinterland, easily combined with a tasting or a winery stop.
About an hour and a quarter south, the fishing village of Imsouane curves around a sheltered bay famous for one of the longest, gentlest right-hand surf waves in Morocco. The working harbour, grilled-fish shacks and laid-back mood make it a rewarding full day for surfers and non-surfers alike.
The Red City lies roughly two and a half to three hours inland by road, making it a possible but very long single day. You would have only a few rushed hours in the medina and souks, so Marrakech is far better enjoyed as an overnight rather than a day trip from Essaouira.
A short 15-minute hop south across the Ksob river, the village of Diabat is wrapped in dunes and Jimi Hendrix legend. Nearby stand the half-buried ruins of the Borj el Berod fort, often linked to the song 'Castles Made of Sand', with a wide quiet beach for walking and riding.
South of Diabat, the dunes and headland of Cap Sim guard a string of empty Atlantic beaches around 30 to 40 minutes from town. Reached on foot, by quad or on horseback, they offer big skies, strong surf and the kind of solitude that is hard to find on busier coasts.
The quiet coastal road north of Imsouane leads to the remote cove and fishing hamlet of Tafedna, around an hour and a half away. With its small beach, simple lodgings and dramatic cliffs, it suits travellers wanting an unhurried day far from any crowds, or a peaceful overnight escape.
Inland in the argan hills, the weekly Wednesday Berber market at Ida Ou Gourd is a working rural souk around 45 minutes from Essaouira. Far from the tourist trail, it trades livestock, produce, spices and household goods, offering an authentic slice of countryside life on the right day.
Morocco's tallest waterfalls, in the Middle Atlas beyond Marrakech, are a tempting sight but lie around four and a half to five hours inland from Essaouira. The distance makes them impractical as a day trip and far better suited to an overnight, ideally broken with a night in Marrakech.
It is possible but not ideal. Marrakech is about two and a half to three hours each way by road, which leaves only a few rushed hours in the city. Most travellers find Marrakech far more rewarding as an overnight trip rather than a long day return from Essaouira.
Sidi Kaouki, about 30 minutes south, is the easiest and most popular, a wild surf beach with cafes and camel rides. For a longer outing, the sheltered surf bay at Imsouane, roughly an hour and a quarter away, is a favourite with surfers and seafood lovers.
It is the inland route toward Marrakech through argan country around Ounagha, where women's cooperatives press argan oil by hand and goats climb the trees. It makes a gentle half-day and pairs well with the Val d'Argan vineyard for a tasting.
Marrakech and the Ouzoud Falls are both better as overnights given the long drives of three hours or more each way. Tafedna and the remote coast north of Imsouane also reward an overnight stay, letting you slow down rather than rush the round trip in a day.
