Overview
A private day in Tangier with a local guide: the Kasbah, the medina and Grand Socco, the American Legation and Café Hafa, then a drive about 14 km west to the Cap Spartel lighthouse and the Hercules Caves.
Tangier sits on the Strait of Gibraltar, about 14 km across the water from Spain, and its history shows in its buildings: the Kasbah on the hill, the Grand and Petit Socco squares, and the American Legation, the first US public property abroad. The morning is a guided walk from the Kasbah Museum down through the medina, with mint tea on the terraces of Café Hafa, open since 1921 above the strait.
After lunch your driver takes the corniche west through the Rmilat forest to Cap Spartel, the north-western tip of Africa where the Atlantic and Mediterranean meet, with its 1864 lighthouse. A few kilometres south are the Hercules Caves, a sea cave whose opening onto the ocean is often compared to the outline of Africa. On the way back there's an optional camel ride on Achakar beach.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
How far is Cap Spartel from Tangier?
About 12–14 km west of the city centre, around 25–30 minutes by car on the corniche. The Hercules Caves are a few kilometres further south along the coast.
Are the Hercules Caves worth visiting?
They are small and take about 30 minutes, but the sea opening shaped like Africa is unusual, and they pair naturally with Cap Spartel on the same road.
Can I do this tour from the ferry or a cruise ship?
Yes. Give us your arrival time at the port and we'll fit the day to it, with a guaranteed return before departure.
