Overview

A private 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Dades and Todra gorges over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, with Aït Ben Haddou, the Skoura oasis and the Valley of Roses — a slower alternative to the Sahara run, with walking in both gorges.

Most desert tours rush through the gorges on the way to Merzouga. This trip makes them the destination. Day one crosses the High Atlas to Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then east along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs to the Dades Valley, about 310 km. You sleep two nights in the valley so you don't pack up every morning.

Day two drives the switchbacks of the Dades gorge at Tisdrine and the rock formations sometimes called the Monkey Fingers, then crosses to Tinghir for a walk in the Todra Gorge, where limestone walls rise to around 300 m above a gap about 10 m wide. Day three returns via Kelaat M'Gouna — the Valley of Roses, at its best during the May rose harvest — and the Skoura palm oasis to Marrakech.

Todra Gorge or Dades Gorge — which is better?

They're different. Todra is a short, narrow canyon you walk into; Dades is a long valley best seen by road, with the Tisdrine switchbacks. This trip covers both.

Can I add the Sahara to this trip?

Yes — Merzouga is about 4 hours beyond Tinghir. Adding it makes a 4-day trip with a night in the dunes.

When is the best time to visit the gorges?

Spring and autumn. May brings the rose harvest at Kelaat M'Gouna; summer is hot but the gorges stay shaded; winter nights are cold and the Tichka pass can see snow.
