Overview
A full-day excursion from Fes to two UNESCO sites: the best-preserved Roman city in North Africa at Volubilis, the holy town of Moulay Idriss, and the imperial gates and granaries of Meknes.
The classic day trip from Fes pairs the finest Roman ruins in Morocco with one of its four imperial cities. Volubilis, an hour west of Fes, was a thriving Roman provincial capital — its triumphal arch, basilica and astonishing in-situ mosaic floors survive amid rolling olive country.
We add the whitewashed holy town of Moulay Idriss, draped across two hills, and the imperial city of Meknes — Moulay Ismail's monumental Bab Mansour gate, his vast royal granaries and stables. A rewarding full-day excursion of Roman history and imperial grandeur, back in Fes by evening.

Frequently asked
Questions about this tour.
How long is the Volubilis and Meknes day trip from Fes?
A full day. Volubilis is about an hour from Fes and Meknes a little beyond it, so we leave around 09:00 and return by about 17:30, with plenty of time at both sites plus Moulay Idriss.
Is Volubilis worth visiting?
Absolutely — it's the best-preserved Roman city in Morocco, with a triumphal arch, columns and remarkable mosaic floors still in place amid olive country. Pairing it with imperial Meknes makes a complete day of history.
Can non-Muslims visit Moulay Idriss?
Yes — the town welcomes visitors, though the central shrine of Moulay Idriss itself is reserved for Muslims. There's a fine viewpoint over the rooftops and pleasant lanes to wander.
