Why Agadir
Agadir is Morocco's premier beach resort — a sweeping golden bay, a palm-lined promenade and over 300 days of sunshine a year, rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake — but for active travellers it is best as a base. The surf village of Taghazout is 20 minutes north, the palm pools of Paradise Valley about an hour inland, and the walled Saadian city of Taroudant an hour east, all comfortable day trips. The city itself is light on old-medina atmosphere; the draw is sea, surf and easy half-day escapes into the Anti-Atlas. Use the beach to recover and the day trips to see the south.
What to see
A 10 km golden bay with calm swimming, beach clubs and one of Morocco's best seafront walks — the easy day with no driving.
A bohemian surf village 20 minutes north — point breaks, yoga, argan co-ops and sunset cafés, an effortless half- or full-day out.
Palm-fringed natural pools and waterfalls carved into the Anti-Atlas, about an hour inland — the region's best half-day escape from the beach.
The hilltop fortress ruins above the bay, reached by cable car, with sweeping views over the port — a quick sunset trip from town.

The easy ones are Taghazout and the surf coast (20 minutes north) and Paradise Valley in the Anti-Atlas (about an hour). The walled city of Taroudant is an hour east, and Essaouira up the coast is doable but better as an overnight. Agadir is the best resort base in the south for half-day escapes.
Agadir is sunnier, warmer and more resort-oriented with a bigger beach; Essaouira is windier but far more atmospheric, with a historic medina and ramparts. Many travellers base in Agadir and take Essaouira as a coastal trip.
