Overview

A private 2-day desert trip from Marrakech to Zagora, about 360–380 km away: Tizi n'Tichka, Aït Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley palm groves, then a camel ride to a camp at the Zagora dunes for the night.

Zagora is the closest Saharan-style dunes to Marrakech, about 360–380 km away, or 6–7 hours of driving each way with stops. Day one crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), stops at the UNESCO ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, and follows the Draa Valley through Agdz past kasbahs and some of the longest palm groves in Morocco. A camel ride at sunset takes you to the camp for dinner and a night under the stars.

The honest trade-off: Zagora's dunes are much smaller than Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, and you spend most of both days in the car. It suits travellers with only two days who want a desert night and the Atlas crossing. If you have three days, the Merzouga trip gives you the large dunes.

Trip highlights

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Is 2 days enough for the Sahara from Marrakech?

Two days is enough for Zagora, not for Merzouga. Zagora is about 6–7 hours each way, so you get one desert night and smaller dunes. For the large Erg Chebbi dunes, allow at least 3 days.

How long is the drive from Marrakech to Zagora?

About 360–380 km, roughly 6–7 hours of driving each way plus stops at Aït Ben Haddou and viewpoints.

Zagora or Merzouga — which is better?

Merzouga has far bigger dunes and a stronger desert feel; Zagora is closer and fits into two days. If your schedule allows three days, we recommend Merzouga.
