Overview

A private 2-day trip from Fes to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga, about 460 km and 7–8 hours' driving each way, through Ifrane, the Azrou cedar forest and the Ziz Valley, with a sunset camel ride and a night in a desert camp.

Be clear about the trade-off: Merzouga is roughly 460 km from Fes, and each day of this trip is about 7–8 hours on the road, more with stops. In return you get a night in the Erg Chebbi dunes, which rise to around 150 m — far larger than anything closer to Fes or Marrakech.

Day one crosses the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and the Azrou cedar forest, where Barbary macaques live, then descends past Midelt to the Ziz Valley gorges and palm groves near Errachidia. You reach Merzouga in the late afternoon for a camel ride to camp. Day two starts with sunrise over the dunes and heads back the same way, reaching Fes in the evening. If you can add a day, the 3-day version adds Rissani market and Khamlia's Gnawa music with less time in the car.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

How long is the drive from Fes to Merzouga?

About 460 km, which is roughly 7–8 hours of driving, and closer to 9 hours with lunch and photo stops.

Is 2 days enough for the Sahara from Fes?

It works if you only have two days, but most of the trip is driving. Three days gives you a full day around Merzouga and makes the journey much easier.

Will I see monkeys on the way?

Usually. Barbary macaques live in the cedar forest near Azrou and are often by the road. Please don't feed them.
