Overview

A full-day excursion to Imlil, the gateway village below North Africa's highest peak: a guided foothill walk through Berber villages and walnut groves, a mule option, and a mountain lunch.

Imlil sits at 1,740m at the foot of Jbel Toubkal (4,167m), the highest mountain in North Africa, and is the launch point for the great Atlas treks. This full-day day trip from Marrakech brings you into the heart of Berber mountain country without committing to a multi-day trek.

A local mountain guide leads you on a walk from Imlil through walnut and cherry groves to the village of Aroumd and a viewpoint over the Toubkal valley — with the option of a mule to carry you or your bag. There's mint tea in a Berber home, a tagine lunch with a mountain view, and time to feel the scale of the High Atlas. Back in Marrakech by evening.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

Do I need to be fit for the Imlil day trip?

A reasonable level of fitness helps — the foothill walk to Aroumd is gentle but at altitude (around 1,800m). You can take a mule for part or all of the walk, and we adjust the route to your group, so it suits most active travellers.

Can I climb Toubkal on a day trip?

No — summiting Jbel Toubkal (4,167m) is a two-day trek with an overnight at the refuge. This day trip explores the foothill villages and viewpoints around Imlil; ask us about a multi-day trek if you want the summit.

Is there snow in Imlil?

In winter, yes — the high peaks are snow-capped from roughly December to April and the village itself can see snow. The foothill walk is usually still doable; bring warm layers and grippy shoes.
