Overview

A private 2-day ascent of Jebel Toubkal (4,167 m), North Africa's highest peak: walk from Imlil (about 1,740 m) to the refuge at about 3,200 m on day one, then summit at dawn and descend to Imlil on day two, with a licensed guide and mule support.

Imlil is about 65 km and 1.5 hours from Marrakech. From there day one is a 5–7 hour walk up the Mizane valley through Aroumd and past the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch to the Toubkal refuge at about 3,200 m. A mule carries your bags, and you sleep in a shared dormitory with dinner cooked at the refuge.

Summit day starts before dawn: about 3–4 hours up a scree-covered south cirque to 4,167 m, with views across the High Atlas and, on clear days, towards the Sahara. The full day — summit and the descent all the way to Imlil — is long, often 9–11 hours, and the altitude is real, so this is for fit hikers. Licensed guides are required on the Toubkal route, with checks above Aroumd. From roughly December to March the mountain is usually snow-covered and you'll need crampons and an ice axe; we arrange these and an experienced winter guide.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

How hard is the 2-day Toubkal trek?

Hard for a first-time hiker. Day two is often 9–11 hours with over 900 m of climbing to the summit and about 2,400 m of descent to Imlil. You should be comfortable walking 6–8 hours on steep ground.

Do I need a guide to climb Toubkal?

Yes. Hikers going up towards Toubkal must be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide, and papers are checked on the trail above Imlil.

When is the best time to climb Toubkal?

Late April to June and September to October for snow-free trails and stable weather. July and August work but are hot lower down. December to March needs crampons, an ice axe and winter experience.

Will I get altitude sickness?

Some people get headaches above 3,500 m. A 3-day version with an extra night in Imlil or Aroumd helps acclimatisation — ask us to quote it.
