Overview

A private half-day from your riad to the Marrakech Palmeraie, about 20 minutes from the medina, with a one-hour camel ride through the palm grove and mint tea in a Berber house — morning or late afternoon.

The Palmeraie is a large palm grove on the northern edge of Marrakech, planted, according to tradition, in the Almoravid era and still irrigated in part by old khettara channels. It is flat and quiet, which makes it a good place for a first camel ride, especially for children or anyone unsure about the longer rides in the desert.

After riad pickup, the camel handlers fit you with a Berber headscarf and you ride for about an hour along sandy tracks between the palms and small farms. The ride ends at a family home for mint tea and msemen pancakes. Morning sessions avoid the midday heat in summer; late-afternoon rides catch the low light over the grove.

Frequently asked

Questions about this tour.

How long is the Palmeraie camel ride?

The ride itself is about an hour. With pickup, tea and the drive back, plan on 2.5–3 hours.

Is the Palmeraie a real desert?

No — it is a palm grove on flat, sandy ground at the edge of the city. For sand dunes you need Merzouga or Zagora; for a stony desert close to Marrakech, Agafay is about 45 minutes away.

Can children ride?

Yes. Young children usually share a camel with an adult, and the handlers walk alongside the whole time.
