Morocco Travel Costs & Budget

Day trips and excursions in Morocco can be done on almost any budget. A shared group excursion costs from roughly US$15–60 per person; a full private-car day with a driver-guide typically runs US$90–250 per car (not per person), so the per-head cost drops sharply when you fill the seats.

Currency and paying on the road

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD), a closed currency you can't easily get before you arrive — withdraw from ATMs or exchange on arrival, ideally before an early excursion start. On a day out, almost everything is cash: roadside lunch stops, viewpoint guides at Ait Ben Haddou or Ouzoud, waterfall-path tips, parking and small purchases. Carry small notes; card machines are rare once you leave the city.

What a day trip actually costs

Rough, real-world ranges to set expectations (they vary by season and how full the vehicle is):

  • Shared group day trip (Ourika, Ouzoud, Agafay): roughly US$15–60 per person, transport and often lunch included.
  • Private-car half-day (Agafay, Ourika, Palmeraie): from around US$70–130 per car for 1–4 people.
  • Private-car full day (Ait Ben Haddou & Ouarzazate, Essaouira): roughly US$130–250 per car including fuel and driver.
  • Lunch on a tagine stop: 60–120 MAD per person; mint tea: 15–30 MAD.
  • Site fees and local guides en route: Ait Ben Haddou village guide ~80–120 MAD; small parking and tip floats throughout.

Where the money goes — and how to save

On an excursion the dominant cost is the vehicle and driver, which is fixed regardless of how many of you ride. That makes the single best saving simply filling the seats — a private Agafay or Ourika car costs the same for two as for four, so the per-person price halves. Beyond that, shared group departures are cheapest, half-days cost far less than full-days, and stacking close excursions (Ourika one day, Agafay the next) avoids paying repeatedly for the long kasbah-road fuel of a Ouarzazate run.

Frequently asked

How much do a few days of Morocco day trips cost?

Budget on roughly US$40–90 per person per day if you mix shared group excursions with self-guided city time, or US$120–250 per car per day for private full-day excursions (split between up to four people). A typical short break of three to four day trips from Marrakech lands well under the cost of a full multi-day guided tour.

Should I bring cash or use cards for day trips in Morocco?

Carry dirham cash for excursions — roadside lunches, viewpoint guides, parking and tips are cash-only. Use cards for your riad and bigger city restaurants. Withdraw enough the day before an early start, as rural ATMs are scarce.

Are Morocco day trips expensive?

Not at all by comparison — a shared group excursion is one of the cheapest ways to see a famous site, and even a private car split four ways is very affordable. The premium only appears with private full-day drivers for one or two people, where the fixed car cost isn't shared.
