Aït Ben Haddou is the postcard image of southern Morocco: a cluster of earthen kasbah towers stacked up a hillside above the Ounila River, classified by UNESCO and familiar from films such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones. The catch is that it sits on the far side of the High Atlas, roughly 180 km from Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka pass — a winding mountain road that takes around 3.5 to 4 hours each way. That single fact drives the whole decision. You can do it as one long day trip, leaving early and returning after dark, usually with a quick stop in nearby Ouarzazate. Or you can stay the night — in the village of Aït Ben Haddou itself or in Ouarzazate 30 km away — and trade the driving marathon for golden-hour light, a calmer pace and the option to push on towards the desert. Both are valid; it comes down to how much time you have and what you want from the ksar.
Option A
Long day trip
There and back in one big day — cross the Atlas, see the ksar, return
Best for
Travellers tight on time who want to tick off the ksar without changing hotels
Option B
Overnight stay
Sleep beside the ksar or in Ouarzazate — golden hour, sunrise, no rush
Best for
Photographers, slow travellers, and anyone using it as a stepping-stone to the desert
