Things to do in Merzouga

Merzouga is the small village at the western edge of Erg Chebbi, the towering dune sea of Morocco's south-east, and it makes a deep-desert base rather than a city of monuments. Most of what surrounds it is sand, palmeries and the historic Tafilalet, so the outings here split clearly between easy half-days on tarmac and remote piste trips that genuinely need a 4x4 and a guide. From the ksour and souk of Rissani to the Gnaoua village of Khamlia, the fossil workshops of Erfoud and the dune circuit on your doorstep, here are nine excursions to build a day around, with honest notes on access and travel time.

9 experiences

The best of Merzouga

01Dune sea

Erg Chebbi Dune Circuit

The reason to be here: the great dunes of Erg Chebbi rise straight behind the village. A half-day 4x4 circuit loops the sand sea past nomad camps and viewpoints, and a dawn or dusk climb up a high dune for sunrise or sunset is the classic Merzouga experience. Right on your doorstep, no long drive needed.

02Seasonal lake

Dayet Srji & flamingos (seasonal)

Just west of the village, Dayet Srji is a shallow seasonal lake that fills after winter and spring rains and can draw flamingos and other migratory birds. It is genuinely seasonal and often dry by summer, so treat it as a short, weather-dependent stop rather than a guaranteed sight.

03Historic town

Rissani souk & ksour

About 40 km and roughly 40 minutes west, Rissani is the historic heart of the Tafilalet and the cradle of Morocco's Alaouite dynasty. Its lively souk runs on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a famous donkey market and produce halls. An easy half-day, best timed to a market morning.

04Ruins & shrine

Sijilmassa ruins & Moulay Ali Cherif mausoleum

On the edge of Rissani lie the eroded ruins of Sijilmassa, the medieval caravan city that anchored the trans-Saharan gold and salt trade, alongside the Moulay Ali Cherif mausoleum, shrine of the Alaouite founder (the courtyard is visitable; the inner sanctuary is for Muslims). Pairs naturally with the Rissani souk.

05Music village

Khamlia Gnaoua village

A few kilometres south of Merzouga, Khamlia is a village of Saharan communities known for Gnaoua music, where local groups perform the hypnotic, trance-style drum-and-metal-castanet sound over mint tea. A very short, easy half-day and one of the area's most distinctive cultural stops.

06Fossils & dates

Erfoud fossil workshops

Around 55 km north, roughly an hour away, Erfoud is the date capital of the Tafilalet and the centre of Morocco's marine-fossil trade. Workshops cut and polish the local Devonian limestone full of ammonites and orthoceras into slabs and tabletops, and you can watch the process. An easy half to full day.

07Palm oases

Tafilalet palmeraie & oases

The wider Tafilalet between Erfoud, Rissani and the dunes is one of Morocco's great date-palm regions, threaded with khettara irrigation channels, mud-brick ksour and orchards. A relaxed half-day drive or walk through the palmeries gives the human, agricultural side of the desert away from the sand.

08Pistes & petroglyphs

Taouz & desert rock carvings

South past Khamlia, the road runs to the frontier hamlet of Taouz, beyond which lie stony hammada, old mining tracks and prehistoric rock carvings (petroglyphs) in the surrounding desert. The carvings sit off-road on piste, so a 4x4 and a local guide are needed to find them. A half to full day.

09Remote 4x4 dunes

Ouzina remote dunes

Far to the south-east, Ouzina is a remote dune outpost reached only by long desert piste and accessible by 4x4 with an experienced driver. It offers emptier, wilder sand than Erg Chebbi but is a committing full-day (or overnight) expedition, not a casual outing. Go with a trusted desert operator.

Frequently asked

What is the best day trip from Merzouga?

The dunes themselves come first: a 4x4 circuit of Erg Chebbi with a sunrise or sunset dune climb is the signature half-day. For culture, Rissani is the standout, an easy 40-minute drive west to the historic Tafilalet town, the Sijilmassa ruins and the souk on Sunday, Tuesday or Thursday.

Which trips from Merzouga need a 4x4 or guide?

Rissani, Erfoud and Khamlia sit on tarmac and are easy in any car. The Erg Chebbi dune circuit, the Taouz rock carvings and especially the remote Ouzina dunes run on desert piste, so they need a 4x4 and an experienced local driver or guide. Treat Ouzina as a committing full-day expedition.

When is the Rissani souk and can you see flamingos at Merzouga?

The Rissani souk runs on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, so time a visit to a market morning. Flamingos at Dayet Srji, the seasonal lake west of the village, depend entirely on rain; the lake fills in winter and spring and is often dry by summer, so it is never guaranteed.

Is Merzouga a good base for the Sahara?

Yes, Merzouga is one of Morocco's best deep-desert bases, right at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes with camel treks, dune 4x4 circuits and desert camps on the doorstep, plus the Tafilalet's history at Rissani and Erfoud within an easy drive. It suits travellers who want sand and silence over city sights.
