Things to do in Zagora

Zagora is the market town of the lower Draa Valley, famous for the old 'Tombouctou 52 jours' caravan sign and a base where the long palm oasis meets the near-desert. This is kasbah, palmeraie and dune country rather than a town of grand monuments, so the outings split clearly between easy half-days close to town and longer 4x4 or overnight trips deep into the remote sands. From the celebrated Quranic library and green-glazed pottery of Tamegroute to the road's-end village of M'hamid and the great dunes of Erg Chigaga, here are ten excursions to build a day around, with honest notes on access and travel time.

10 experiences

The best of Zagora

01Quranic library

Tamegroute library & zawiya

About 20 km south of Zagora, Tamegroute is home to the historic Naciri zawiya and its renowned Quranic library, which preserves centuries-old illuminated manuscripts on subjects from theology to medicine and astronomy. The library and the maze-like ksar around it make a rewarding, easy half-day close to town.

02Pottery & crafts

Tamegroute green pottery cooperative

Beside the zawiya, Tamegroute is just as famous for its distinctive green-glazed pottery, fired in communal underground kilns using a glaze coloured with local copper and manganese. You can watch potters at the wheel and visit the cooperative, an easy stop that pairs naturally with the library on the same morning.

03Small dunes

Tinfou dunes

Near Tamegroute, the small Tinfou dunes rise abruptly from the flat hammada and give a quick taste of golden sand without a long desert drive. They are modest compared with the great ergs further south, but make an easy half-day and a good sunset stop, often combined with Tamegroute.

04Viewpoint

Jbel Zagora viewpoint

The rocky ridge of Jbel Zagora rises just south of town, topped by an old fort and crossed by a track up to a panoramic viewpoint over the palm ribbon of the Draa and the desert beyond. A short, easy outing best at sunrise or sunset, walkable for the fit or reachable by car or 4x4.

05Palm oasis

Draa Valley palmeraie & kasbahs

Zagora sits in the middle of Morocco's longest palm oasis, a green ribbon threaded with mud-brick ksour, irrigation channels and date groves. A relaxed half-day drive or walk through the palmeraie around town gives the agricultural, human side of the valley away from the dunes.

06Caravan kasbah

Agdz & Tamnougalt kasbah

North toward Ouarzazate, roughly an hour and a half up the Draa, the town of Agdz and the old caravan kasbah of Tamnougalt guard the head of the valley below the Tizi n'Tinififft pass. Tamnougalt is a handsome, partly inhabited earthen ksar you can walk through, making a half to full day of palmeries and ksour.

07Desert village

M'hamid el Ghizlane

About 95 km south, roughly an hour and a half, M'hamid el Ghizlane is the literal end of the tarmac, a frontier oasis village where the Draa fades into the Sahara. Its weekly souk, old ksar and the surrounding palmeraie make a long but doable day, and it is the gateway to the remote dunes further on.

08Remote dune sea

Erg Chigaga dunes (4x4 / overnight)

The great dune sea of Erg Chigaga lies far beyond M'hamid, reached only by a long desert piste of around two hours by 4x4 with an experienced driver. It is wilder and emptier than Erg Chebbi, but the distance makes it a committing full-day expedition or, far better, an overnight in a desert camp rather than a casual outing.

09Piste & desert gateway

Foum Zguid & Iriki route

West of the valley, the small town of Foum Zguid is the other gateway to Erg Chigaga and the seasonal Lac Iriki bed, linked to M'hamid by a classic cross-desert 4x4 piste. The drive itself is the experience; it needs a 4x4 and a trusted operator and is a full-day or multi-day route rather than a quick trip.

10Camel trek

Camel trek into the near-desert

From Zagora and the villages toward M'hamid, short camel treks head out across the palmeraie edge and nearby sands to a fixed camp for sunset, dinner and a night under the stars. A half-day ride into the near-desert is the classic Zagora experience, with longer treks possible toward the bigger dunes.

Frequently asked

What is the best day trip from Zagora?

Tamegroute is the standout, about 20 km south, where you can see the historic Quranic library and the famous green-glazed pottery cooperative in one easy half-day. Pairing it with the small Tinfou dunes and the Jbel Zagora viewpoint makes a relaxed full day close to town.

Can you visit the Erg Chigaga dunes on a day trip from Zagora?

It is possible but demanding. Erg Chigaga lies beyond M'hamid (about an hour and a half south) plus around two hours of desert piste by 4x4, so a day trip means a lot of driving. Most travellers do it as an overnight in a desert camp with an experienced operator rather than a single long day.

Which trips from Zagora need a 4x4 or guide?

Tamegroute, Tinfou, the Jbel Zagora viewpoint, the palmeraie, Agdz and M'hamid all sit on tarmac and are easy in a normal car. The deep dunes of Erg Chigaga and the Foum Zguid–Iriki crossing run on long desert piste, so they genuinely need a 4x4 and a trusted local driver or operator.

Is Zagora a good base for the Draa Valley and the desert?

Yes. Zagora is the natural base for the lower Draa, sitting in Morocco's longest palm oasis with Tamegroute, Tinfou, the kasbahs of the valley and camel treks on the doorstep, plus M'hamid and the remote Erg Chigaga dunes within reach for those willing to go deeper into the Sahara.
