The road south from Marrakech climbs through the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka, at around 2,260 metres one of Morocco's highest paved passes. It is a winding, scenic drive of roughly 3.5 to 4 hours each way, with sweeping mountain views and tea-stop villages along the way.
The ksar is a cluster of earthen kasbahs and houses packed behind defensive walls on a hillside above the river. Built from rammed earth (pisé) and adobe, it is a striking example of southern Moroccan pre-Saharan architecture and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987.
The old village sits across the Ounila riverbed from the modern settlement. Depending on the water level you cross on stepping stones or a built-up path to reach the ksar — wear shoes you do not mind getting dusty, and expect the crossing to be easy most of the year.
A path winds up through the kasbahs to the old fortified granary (agadir) crowning the hill. The climb takes a steady 20 to 30 minutes and rewards you with a panorama over the river, the palm groves and the surrounding desert mountains — best in soft morning or late-afternoon light.

Aït Benhaddou lies about 30 km from Ouarzazate, the 'gateway to the desert' and home to film studios. Many full-day trips pair the two, with a stop in Ouarzazate to see the Taourirt Kasbah or the studio gates on the way back.
Some routes take the older road through Telouet, the crumbling former seat of the Glaoui clan, whose restored salons reveal lavish zellige and carved cedar. It adds time but offers a quieter, atmospheric counterpoint to the busier main ksar.
Cafes and terraces near the river crossing serve mint tea and tagine with views of the ksar, and small stalls sell rugs, pottery and sand paintings. It is a pleasant place to rest before the long drive back over the mountains.
