Why Ouzoud Falls

The Cascades d'Ouzoud are the country's most rewarding nature day trip from Marrakech: a 110-metre triple waterfall in the Middle Atlas, about 2h30 each way, easily done and back by evening. The falls drop into a green gorge often crowned with afternoon rainbows in the spray, and a shaded path winds down past olive groves and old water mills (ouzoud means 'olives' in Berber). Troops of wild Barbary macaques live along the way, and small boats ferry visitors to the foot of the cascades. Go early to be at the falls before the midday minibuses arrive from the city.

What to see

Highlights of Ouzoud Falls.

01

The main cascades

A 110m three-tier waterfall thundering into a pool — walk down to the base or take a small boat into the spray, the core of the day.

02

Barbary macaques on the path

Wild, habituated monkeys live in the olive and oak woods beside the trail — keep your distance and your snacks zipped away.

03

Gorge walk to the El Abid river

A gentle trail below the falls into a green river gorge with riverside cafés and swimming spots — a good way to stretch a half-day into a full one.
